Always a kb/m user here. For pool, from what i remember, some basic and really working controls were: - mouse moves the stick to look around the table - holding some key down for more precise movement - hold another key and use the mouse to put some backspin or anything by selecting where to hit the cue ball, and another to set the stick's angle - holding a key and move the mouse to set power and hit the ball These keys could be set on the mouse buttons too, or have the option to reconfig, depending on someone's preference. KB/M is my preference when done well. I apologise for referencing another game but Virtual Pool 3 from Celeris got it bang on (some years ago now). 1) Players could define their own keys/mouse buttons - every key used in the game could be user-defined.
Related note: Each player was also able to define their preferred view settings for taking a shot and moving around the table e.g. Some players prefer to be closer to the table when taking a shot (chin on the cue) while others are barely bent over at all. 2) The mechanics of taking a shot were sublime. Players held down the 'take shot' key and then the forward and backward movement of the player's mouse was directly linked to the cue i.e. Moving the mouse was equivalent to moving the elbow joint of your cue-holding arm. There were no power meters - the faster you pushed your mouse forward, the harder your shot was. There was, of course, more complexity to it than that but you get the deviation in your mouse 'swing' affected accuracy and so on.
The shot is taken when the virtual cue tip meets the virtual cue ball meaning you could take as many practice 'swings' as you liked by stopping just short of contact.just like on a real table. 3) English, player position around the table, cue angle and other actions had their own keys which were held down and then the mouse was moved to set position/angle etc. Again, apologies for referencing another game but it really was a great control system. I've already purchased Pool Nation and I'm really looking forward to it because it looks like it adds a lot of life into a sport that can be seen by some as quite dull (their loss). However, I'm hoping that underneath all the pin sharp graphics and fun extras I'll find a rock solid pool game that I can get into as much as I used to before and that was all down to those controls. The controls are great on the PSN version.
I hope they will also have great controls with the keyboard and mouse, and I think it will. The developers are adding exclusive content for this PC version so I don't think its going to be just a lazy port, but I could be wrong. If it's at least as good as the PSN version then it will be awesome and well worth the $7.50 pre-order price. That being said, my girlfriend hates pool and hates this game, so if you don't like pool in the first place then this game is not for you! I would like to see full controls for a Mouse and a Keyboard as alternate options. With the Mouse Buttons 1 could get your angle you need by holding the button down and the other mouse button you click on to shoot the Ball and you could Roll back the mouse and Roll it Forward to adjust your Strength shot.
Once you have your Strength selected then press the Mouse Button to take your shot. Just an example of what I think, a keyboard maybe easier? Not sure yet though what to expect with controls.
